Critical investigation research

The first ever social media football world cup!

Who is being represented?
Many different people are being represented within the world cup. One group that was being presented was the actual country of Brazil who did undergo large amounts of negative publicity due to the contrasting state of their country. In which they invested vast amounts of money into the world cup 2014 when there were parts within their country which needed this money more, such as the people in poverty. As a result of this protests occurred just before the world cup and some even during the world cup which could have been done to gain media coverage.

You could then connote this in that Brazil were seen as the bad people in the world as they only care for the rich and not the poor and more needy. Similarly with Luis Suarez in which he was connoted and represented as a bad guy which is sort of backed up, but some social networking sites took it to a new extreme and also took more exaggerated approaches.

You could also put this into a narrative as Luis Suarez is the villain in all of this relating to the theory of Propp and that Chiellini is the princess who has been saved by fifa but also at the same time is the hero as he didn't fight back against Suarez and accepted his apology and even said he'd like the ban to be reduced.

Within this many institutions then started to realise that there was a chance to promote themselves. Such as businesses such as Nando's taking advantage of the Suarez bite and using Twitter to promote themselves and this did work due to them gaining many retweets and as a result people would have been more aware of them as a brand. So you could see they used the commercial side of things here.

There are no audiences that are specifically targeted for the world cup as this is a world wide tournament and is the biggest sporting tournament in the world. However you could say within demographics that A, B groups could actually go to brazil to watch the games on the other side D, E could not as they do not have enough finances to go to brazil and watch the world cup and just watch it at home instead. Also in the UK you would have ITV and BBC broadcasting the world cup in which these two different broadcasters may draw in different types of audiences as one as adverts and the other doesn't for example.
