Working title
Do Spotify and other developing new and digital media services have an impact on the current music industry?

Angle

How is Spotify affecting the music industry

Hypothesis

Spotify is affecting artists and how they are selling their music.

Institution

Spotify would be the main institution involved alongside where I read about MTV and other institutions such as Sony .

Audience

This would relate to the audiences of Spotify which would predominately be youth, this could be due to internet and music in which teenagers dominate

Ideologies

Based on left wing debates
Regulation and censorship

changing technologies in the 21st century and the effect of globalisation on the media. In terms of ownership and control, the concept of owners of industries can be discussed as well as the owners of certain music streaming sites such as Spotify and itunes. The regulation and censorship is based on the type of music is out and who regulates this to make it suitable for a certain age group ect...
The digital revolution and media technology will be based on how technology has advanced over the years (especially in the 21st century) and how its affected music.

Issues/Debates:

Critical investigation proposal

Working title
How has the world cup proven that social media is forever changing?

Angle
I believe social media is having an impact on audiences

Hypothesis
The world cup 2014 showed that social media is changing with the times and meeting audience needs.

Migrain
Representations - Relating to Luis Suarez, he was represented as the folk devil and creating moral panic on Twitter to what he had done during the world cup. You could say that the representations were fair in a way as what he had done was crazy.

Iconography - The world cup sort of connoted that Twitter is moving on and the world cup is the prime example of this, not just Twitter also Facebook and snap chat too. Obviously the images and iconography are going to be related to the world cup, such as the hashtag world cup thing on Twitter and Rio live on snap chat.

Narrative - You could say there was a narrative throughout the world cup which was shown on social networking. For e.g. Zuniga the player who injured Neymar was seen as the villain and Neymar was seen as the princess who needed saving, Brazil were sort of the heroes however then got battered in the next round. Also in relation to Germany they could have been seen as the main heroes of the whole thing as they won the World Cup and would have been seen as heroes by many.

Genre - There is no real genre apart from sport and social media. I think the audiences expectations had been filled due to social networking adapting to the world cup to sort of make audiences feel involved with the whole process. In relation to narrative the star could have been someone like James Rodriguez who won millions of plaudits and many thought should have won player of the tournament, with the directors and writers being FIFA the footballing organisation who made this happen.

Institutions - In the UK it is both public and commercial due to BBC and ITV showing the games with the BBC being public and ITV being commercial, these are the institutions which were involved in the world cup with BBC taking the most views throughout the world cup.

Audiences - There were many audiences involved as it is the world cup so it is for the whole world to watch their countries play, so there really isn't any specific type of audiences to be watching the games.

SHEP
Social - this is what my main focus is on in my investigation. You have Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and snap chat in ways you could socialise with people when the world cup was on. There were many ways in which social networking adapted to the audience demands such as hashtaging for your country, Rio live, getting live updates on matches through Twitter etc.

Historical - You could relate the world cup as an historical tournament as it has been going on for decades now showing that it is part of countries histories and now alongside this history was the first ever social media world cup.

Economic - You could relate this to the economic situation in Brazil, as in my research it said many people didn't want the world cup to take place in Brazil as there were more serious problems to be sorted out such as poverty as well as many other problems.

Political - This could relate to economic due to the protests that were being made at the start of the world cup against the world cup and that the government went against most of the peoples wishes in Brazil and spent a lot of money on the world cup which could have been spent elsewhere in Brazil as these are now most likely going to be long term problems.

Media technology and digital revolution
My investigation backs up this point precisely in that the world cup has proven a digital revolution, showing the importance of social media in today's day and age. You could just go on Twitter and you would find out everything major that was happening in this example you would find out the latest scores.

Moral panic
You could relate moral panic to Luis Suarez in which he caused a panic and disturbance to the social networking society you could say due to what he done to Chiellini this caused major shock waves through social networking and mainly tweeting abuse to him. You could also relate it to the protesters who were protesting against the world cup who believed Brazil hosting the world cup was the wrong idea, these protesters caused moral panic towards the government and the rest of the country as well as the world as the news spread.

News values
As I am relating this to social media, the way in which you could get the news would be through social networking, as I will explain further on if there is a Twitter account that has a lot of followers of verified we would believe and trust what they are saying. Also on Twitter you could go to the trending section or the search section to find out the news you want.

The effect of globalization on the media
Globalization as effected the media as we can now interact with many people across the world due to social networking. As I have already stated the world cup is the prime example of this as we got to interact with celebrities across the world, seeing what their opinions were on the games. This is because the world cup is a world wide tournament and showing us that social media is becoming the number one platform due to the free and easy access of it.

Audience theories - The hypodermic needle could be linked to Twitter for e.g. in that if an account with many followers or indeed is verified, this would make the rest of the people on Twitter believe that this account can be trusted and therefore will believe what the account is tweeting. By believing this account they may not make their own opinion but just copy what this account has tweeted as they believe what they have said is right.

Uses and gratification theory - The uses and gratification could have been used in the world cup as it created a social interaction. As people would be tweeting or writing statuses about the world cup and we could then reply back with what we think and also linked in with celebrities as well as we get to see what they are tweeting about. Also entertainment as we get entertained by the football that is going on such as Germany's 7-1 over Brazil. We could even identify us in someone such as role models the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar would be seen as role models to many.
